Indian Country Today interviewed former WA Governor Gary Locke who now serves as the Secretary of Commerce for President Obama.  The interview — which took place when Secretary Locke addressed a national Indian business convention in Las Vegas this week — is here.

Locke talked about the importance of the 2010 Census which his Department is in charge of, and specifically noted the fact that Indians are usually undercounted.  “Why the traditional undercount?” Locke asked. “I think it’s because of neglect by the federal government over hundreds of years toward Indian country, and so there’s been a disconnect.”  Locke added that the more Indians participate in the Census, “It means greater clout in the halls of Congress; it means greater clout in the state legislatures. … It also means ensuring tribes get their fair share of government funding.”

Earlier, Locke addressed the Reservation Economic Summit saying, “The First Americans will not be the last Americans in our economic recovery.”
