The Olympic Spirit

Jim Thorpe, Sac and Fox great

Jim Thorpe, Sac and Fox great

We have been hunkered down burning the NBC logo onto our 1990s era 4:3 tv set watching the Olympics on NBC and CBC for 24-7.

We are thinking about the greatest athlete of all – Jim Thorpe – a member of the Sac and Fox tribe who was voted greatest athlete of the first half of the 20th Century and inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Among the Thorpe lore is the story that at the 1912 Olmpics in Stockholm, the King of Sweden congratulated him by saying “you, sir, are the greatest athlete in the world.”  To which Thorpe replied, “Thanks, King.”   Maybe not the exact equivalent of “whoot hoot”, but a modest version, nonetheless.

According to the Snow Riders there have only been 12 Native Americans in the modern summer and winter Olympics, including Billy Mills (1964 10,000 meter GOLD) and Jim Thorpe (1912 Decathalon GOLD).  We think there must be more.

Post a comment and let us know,  In the meantime, we are getting down watching beach volleyball, boxing, badminton, and the Redeem Team!
